Tie Down Roping/Ladies Breakaway
Roping School a
Success for NPIRA
By: Kari Zubach –
INFR Correspondent
It was a beautiful Easter weekend on the Northern
Cheyenne Reservation as a lucky group had the opportunity to join Allen
Fisher for his free calf roping and breakaway school. It was all
donated time for Fisher and Tracy Robinson. Allen was a very patient
and knowledgeable instructor. Most would recommend anyone interested in
roping, or those who need to tune-up their skills, to take the
opportunity to visit with Allen.
The school ran Friday and Saturday, April 14 and
15, 2006. Many young children attended the community event at the Lame
Deer Rodeo Grounds, which was a big success for Fisher. Allen is a big
promoter for the development of Native American youth potential.
"Having the Northern Plains Indian Rodeo
Association (NPIRA) has already created such a great opportunity for our
native youth, and there is so much talent on the reservation,” said
Fisher. "In the past we would have to travel hundreds of miles to
participate in an Indian Rodeo. Many times the children would be left
behind. Now, with the association in our backyard, these children are
getting to participate and develop their own goals and objectives”.
Northern Cheyenne cowboys and cowgirls hold a
title in all the Indian National Finals events except the bareback
riding. Allen Fisher himself won a Calf Roping World Championship in
1982. With the NPIRA running strong, there is bound be more titles
going back to the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
Once again, we would like to thank Allen and Tracy
for donating their time, hard work, and expertise. Their generosity is
very much appreciated. More upcoming free clinics will be coming up for
anyone who is interested. For more information go to the NPIRA website
at
www.npira.org, or contact Paula Small at (406) 665-7142.
